How this list works

Twenty sights, each with its own page: what it is, why it is there, and what to expect when you arrive. No prices and no opening times — those change, and the operator is the only source that is right on the day.

If you have one day, the shortest honest answer is the old town, the castle hill and the seafront, in that order, on foot. Everything else is a bonus.

Reading the city

Nice divides very cleanly. East of Place Masséna is the Italian city — the old town, the baroque churches, the port. West and north is the French one — the Promenade, the wide avenues, the basilica, the winter villas.

Up the hill at Cimiez is the Roman town that came before both of them.
